"We're fortunate, you know. Too many people in this world spend their lives doing work that doesn't really matter in the great scheme of things, but bringing children and books together does matter. And we get to do it." -Katherine Paterson
In the Classroom
Ms. Melinda Meyer is in her eighth year as a 1st grade teacher at Westmeade Elementary. Though she spent much of her childhood in the Washington D.C. area, her father’s military career gave her the opportunity to live in many places and develop broad cultural understanding. She attended Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, GA and graduated in 2009 with a BA in Elementary Education. She then moved to Nashville to take a position at Westmeade Elementary!
Ms. Meyer loves teaching 1st grade. Reading is her favorite subject to teach and discuss with colleagues. Her interest in reading and the realization that 1st grade is an essential age where students establish a firm foundation in reading, led her to return to school to earn her Master’s Degree in Reading Specialty from Lipscomb University. She strives daily toward her goal of helping her students develop an enjoyment of reading. In her time at Westmeade she has received recognition both at the district and school levels. In 2015 she was the recipient of the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools Blue Ribbon Teacher award for her relationship with students. The following year, she was named Teacher of the Year at Westmeade. This honor was especially meaningful because it was bestowed by her colleagues. |
Out of the Classroom
When she isn’t in the classroom, Ms. Meyer enjoys watching and playing sports. Volleyball and tennis are particular favorites. She loves to cook, garden, shop, go on walks, and craft. She would be remiss not to include reading as one of her favorite activities as well. Her summer vacations are filled with trips to visit her family as they are also a big part of her life.
